Setting the scene

Overwhelmed? Overthinking? Frustrated? Don’t know where to start, but feel driven like a motor? Anxious? And still saying “yes” to too much?

These are familiar ADHD traits. You may have one, some, all or none.

Then there’s the frequently co-occurring conditions such as autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, tourette syndrome and giftedness (high IQ), which add further complexity.

Each of us has our own life experience, preferences and medical card. We are all unique and ADHD – and neurodivergency generally – benefits from a nuanced approach, based around our own individual needs, and coaching can help.

What is coaching, and the ADHD lens?

Coaching is an active partnership. Sessions are forward-looking, working to upskill you in addressing challenges you have in a safe, genuinely non-judgemental, understanding space.

Some techniques designed for the neurotypical population can cause more harm than good for ADHDers. Our brains work differently and we need to understand this to get the best out of ourselves – hence the ADHD lens. For example, leaning into our ADHD strengths, rather than trying to ignore or fight them.

What topics can I discuss?

Usually these are challenges you are facing but it can be anything at all. Often, to start with, it might be something from the world of work, but as our sessions continue and you get to know me better and feel more comfortable, recognising that you are in a safe space, the nature of the topics will evolve perhaps beyond the boundaries you initially set yourself.

Benefits of coaching

I know from my own experience of being coached, that I’m happier and more comfortable with myself than I have ever been. I’m also more focused. My perspective has shifted so that when things don’t go as I expect, I roll with this, rather than inefficiently try and tackle it head on. My personal skills toolkit has expanded and improved.

However, here is a list of common benefits – you’ll need to discover your own of course!

  • Improved confidence and resilience
  • Increased self-awareness – strengths, weaknesses, values and beliefs
  • Better decision making
  • Improved practical skills such as time management and task prioritisation
  • Enhanced job satisfaction

How does coaching work?

As part of the personal development industry, surprisingly it isn’t about giving you answers. If it were, self-help books or podcasts would be enough. The main focus is helping you work with yourself more constructively, activating more of the qualities and skills you already have, unlocking your potential. After all you’ve actually done well in life so far, just you now want to do even better, however you define that!

Much of a coaching session is conversation, and you having a trusted thinking partner. This activates areas of the brain that internal thought processes just don’t get to.

For each session you will come with a topic you want to address and we will look at it together, in partnership. After every session, you will be further along the pathway. Sometimes this will be more knowledge and awareness, at other times this will be a solution, or at least a new way of approaching the challenge – all through that ADHD lens.

Plus homework. As with all projects, the more effort you put in, the better the outcome will be!

The only guarantee is that the solutions won’t be quite what you expect. If they were, you wouldn’t be asking for coaching in the first place, because those solutions would have already worked.

Autism and other co-occurring conditions

Over 40% of people with ADHD also have Autism; others have dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia and tourette syndrome and giftedness, or a combination thereof.

We are not any one thing alone, but a huge complicated set of interactions – and that’s just on the purely physical front, before getting into the intrinsic values that we hold, and our unique life experiences, so I bring an open mind to the sessions. I try not to prejudge you, instead I meet you as you are, and lean into those strengths regardless – not the person who you, or others, think you ought to be.

Quality Assurance

I am ICF accredited (at ACC standard) and have regular mentoring sessions with a highly experienced (2500+ hour) ICF and PAAC-approved Master Certified ADHD coach, because – just like any profession – there is always room for improvement.

The ICF accreditation required taking an extensive course, being mentored, an exam which confirmed I know the ethics standards I have promised to uphold, 100+ coaching hours, and a quantifiable commitment to continued learning.

I am also a member of ACO, the ADHD Coaches Organization, which allows me to meet other ADHD coaches, share experience, learn from each other, and keep up to date on the latest ADHD research.

Finally, as part of my journey in getting the above, I have also become ADDCA Associate Certified Coach (AACC) certified – meaning I have specific ADHD Life Coaching skills, as well as general coaching skills.

Client Testimonials

“Having had coaching before, I hadn't realised the importance that looking at issues through an ADHD lens could make. Paul made me feel at ease, creating a safe space where I could truly be myself, asking the right questions to guide me toward valuable insights.”

“Sometimes the best sessions are when I go in with a question, and Paul lets me answer it myself. It's weird, but it helps me process and de-stress.”

FAQ's

Any! Usually we start with a work related topic, so you can experience what a coaching session looks and feels like whilst feeling within your comfort zone. But thereafter hopefully you’ll feel more comfortable bringing other topics, from a wider area if you want, where an external thinking partner might be useful.

You should start seeing benefits from the first session, but the real impact often begins after three months as we establish a relationship and you learn to make the most of our sessions.

Many clients start with weekly sessions for about nine months, with occasional breaks for holidays etc, before reducing the frequency. However, some clients prefer just one session or ad hoc, and that’s perfectly fine too — you’re in the driver’s seat.

Yes! I’ve spent several years living and working in mainland Europe, so I’m very comfortable working with clients who speak English as a second language.

If you use English in your workplace, you’ll be absolutely fine. That said, having a ADHD-trained coach who speaks your native language is usually the best option.

The coaching agreement outlines expectations and obligations for both of us. Whilst it is a legal agreement, it helps establish the ground rules for scenarios that commonly come up – the cancellation policy for example.

I don’t offer discounts but I accept Access to Work UK-based grants if you already have one in place. As I understand it there is a 6+ month delay for new sign ups to get fully authorised.

I do believe in paying it forward through volunteering. For example, I volunteer with the Scottish ADHD Coalition and have previously assisted ADHD Aware.  Both are involved with peer support groups amongst other offerings.

If you’re looking for more affordable coaching, you can contact ADDCA at info [at] addca.com. They can connect you with a student ADHD coach who offers discounted rates.

“Naturally Paul” has long been my social media handle. It represents my authentic self — the good days, the frustrated days, and everything in between. When choosing the company name, I realised it reflects the holistic philosophy I bring to my coaching: we are the sum of our parts and experiences. There’s also more about me, and my own journey, in my bio.
